Uncertain origin, attributed to Benjamin Disraeli (British PM, literary writer, (1804 - 1881) and brought to America and re-popularised by Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835-1910). Other sources suggest Charles Wentworth Dilke (literary critic, 1843-1911) was the begetter.
