Japanese rice-farmers are getting artistic. Since the early 90s, some Japanese rice farmers have been experimenting with planting differently coloured rice in patterns to attract tourists, astound friends and relieve boredom. They construct their pattern / planting plan using software, execute, and then wait for a few months before the fruits of their labour becomes visible.
Think about that for a second.. when they're planting, they're down in the sloshy field, with bags of different rice shoots. Shoot after shoot they'll anchor in the ground, under the water. It's a repetitive, tiring task. To achieve the artistic splendour that you see below, they have to maintain awareness not just of the task at hand, but also of their absolute position in the paddy. Intense. Kudos.
