Note that this applies to the Debian Linux distro as well.

Microsoft Compiled HTML Help is a proprietary format for online help files, developed by Microsoft and first released in 1997 as a successor to the Microsoft WinHelp format. It was first introduced with the release of Windows 98, and is still supported and distributed through Windows XP and Vista platforms. [1]

The results figures given a the approximate number of hits in a Google search.

The features look pretty similar, except for one that stands out from kchmviewer.  This is Tabbed Browsing.  For this alone, I recommend kchmviewer.  To install:

sudo apt-get install kchmviewer

The heavy-lifting work of chm parsing handled by libchm1, and kchmviewer takes care of the presentation, and you-interface.
