Listen to Zee Avi's NPR Tiny Desk Concert. A cosy performance of three of her favourite songs.
Zee Avi hails from Malaysia originally, and in a minor magnificence of the internet, was discovered through you-tube. She was brave, confident and gumptioned enough to make some nice recordings of herself, post them through the tubes, and lucky enough to catch the eye of many, including Patrick Keeler from the Raconteurs, who forwarded it to the White Stripes' manager. Within a month, Zee signed with Jack Johson's Brushfire Records.
She's got a beautiful voice, and wonderful laid-back style, which I think sits perfectly next to Johson in the Brushfire stable. She is down to earth and humble, adding to her charm: "I'm still pinching myself" she gushes. "My parents always told me it's important to keep yourself grounded. I'm thankful, but at the same time, I just want to jump through the roof. It's been a pretty amazing journey, getting to work with some really wonderful people, a blessing, really."
